My painting inspiration tends to come from the beauty I see around me. No doubt my artistic footprint is left on the paper, just as no two signatures are the same. It can be hard to pin-point what motivates each painting, it’s complex and woven into who I am. Yet partly I’m striving to give an impression of the most beautiful version of my surroundings, a quick photo snap often doesn’t do it justice. Paintings can be truly evocative, capturing the essence of a place, which gives the viewer a deep emotional connection. I love to feel that connection and love to see it in others too.
I live and work in Glossop, an historic former mill town on the edge of the Peak District, Derbyshire, in the North of England. There is so very much inspiration within a short distance of home – the countryside around here is amongst the most beautiful in the world. High hills, unspoilt valleys, winding rivers, dales carved out during the ice age, acres of trees and plantations, grasslands and wild moors filled with protected heather, vast stone edges and peculiar weather worn formations of stone figures. I was not born to it – yet I love it as though I were. I love to walk amongst it and of course to paint it.
Landscapes and the coast are a particular joy to paint and I know there are others out there who appreciate the beauty and peaceful sanctuary of those places as I do. Aiming to find an audience in such people, who love this green and pleasant landscape, in its raw beauty, rough hewn by nature, untouched by modern industry and commerce. This collection of art speaks to those folk in a whisper of belonging, stirring that familiar calming connection to the landscape. With a simple invitation that one of these views could be their own companion, gently evoking and echoing the land we love.
